But on the way home I stopped in downtown Denver and had some fun with my 912E and my T2i, two shining examples of non-premium products of great brands.
I know that the whole fake vintage photo look things has been done (a LOT), but I liked how it felt so I went with it anyway.

Did you enjoy yourself at Coffee? I saw you roll through... Thanks for bringing your car and bike up, I wanted to chat you up, but missed you at the end.

Oh I loved C&C! So many cool cars, but so many people that I decided to not sweat trying to take a good picture and I just soaked in the cars. LOVED the old Toyota, the Countach, the early Esprit, and the Jeep truck. So many other great rides as well. It's amazing how a great old car made me pass over the McLaren. I just love cars with personality and stories. I'm going to try to be back in August with a different car. If you see me say hi, and let me know how to find you too!

First off your pics make me want a 912e now. Second...your pics make me want a t2i now... what brand is the bike? I can't quite tell from the pics but I really like it....and the bike is a more realistic purchase for me.

What's with the Pantone-style color swatches on the side? I think they're a nice touch, just wondering if there's any reason for them.
And did you make that bike rack? It's beautiful. I never thought I'd call a bike rack "beautiful."

Those colors are the "livery" of the bike team I helped start and run. you can kinda see them along the bottom of the jersey here. The bike is also a project of mine, and flies the same colors on the frame and top tube.

Oh, http://pedroracks.com/ made the rack. He was cool because I drew him the way I wanted a single cross bar to work and he figured it out. Otherwise with dual cross bars on the top the car would stick WAY up in the air on the top of the car and kinda look horrible. The slightly off the back mounting position on the rear decklid worked out perfectly. Pedro rocks!

VERY cool personal touch! I figured the bike was a project too- you don't get something that cool from the factory.
Have you made any mechanical mods to the 912? I'd love to have one, maybe even more than a 911 of that era since I wouldn't be scared to open up an old beetle engine.

I blew the original engine somehow and purchased a completely intact and running second 912E engine for 1k a few years back. (minor miracle, since they go for about 4k if you can even find one). Currently the car is running the donor engine. At some point I will probably have the donor engine rebuild with more power and then have the numbers matching engine rebuilt as well for originality's sake. It is really cool that the engine is such a known quantity and easy to mod. As funds allow, it will be fun to play with it. I actually have the car serviced at a VW shop (Painter's Grinding) because they are cool VW dudes who know everything about the car and unfortunately the two Denver Porsche shops I visited turned their noses up at me when I brought the car in. Lame.

I think there's something to be said for purposefully abstaining from taking pictures at car shows from time to time... Sometimes I get caught up just 'trying to make sure I capture everything' or get the right angle or whatnot, and I start paying more attention to the act of taking pictures than to the subjects of those pictures. Not to say anything against capturing the scene for later, but sometimes by purposefully telling myself 'I'm not taking pictures of these cars' I can appreciate them more in the moment.

Your Porsche is better looking than 95% of what the rich guys bring to Cars and Coffee, so I can understand why you wouldn't waste space on your SD card for them. The 912 might be ridiculed for its performance but its hard to fault its looks.

Totally agree. I've also noticed the same on family vacations: That tradeoff between experiencing the moment and documenting it. Difficult to have both.

Damn I want that bike! I live here in denver as well and ride quite often. Haven't hit the trails much as I enjoy urban riding alot. That being said if you ever want an outside opinion or simply someone to test the bike for you as a definitely potential customer let me know. I am in the market for a cross bike as I have my road and track covered very nicely. I would love to see this thing in person and get it out on the road and some trails. You can email me at mbhondlik@gmail.com if you ever want a little extra market research

Thanks for the offer! Right now we have five bikes and five testers (each own a bike). Feedback has been great. We've race the bike on the road AND in mountain bike races. While it isn't super dialed for any specific discipline, it is a hoot in road, CX, and MTB, which was the point of trying the project. The next step will be to tweak the design for 2.0 and get it super dialed so that we can sell it. It takes patience for sure, but it is a lot of fun.

So you got a replacement 912 engine? That sounds like a stoke of luck! Are there many differences between the beetle engine and the 912 engine? I always thought they were identical.
It's funny that the Porsche shops acted all snooty toward you. The 912 is like the first Boxster, but a hundred times cooler. A VW shop treating you well makes me really want an aircooled VW, the community is super tight-knit and specialty shops actually exist.

Yes I got it from a rolled 912E. The condition was unknown, but it fired ride up and I've put a few thousands of miles on it. The lower of the engine is VW (same as the one used in the bus I think, type IV), but Porsche used some better parts here and there, engineered their own heads, and used a fairly unique fuel injection (L-Jetronic I think). The basic VW engine principles apply to most of the lump though. I'd love to get a Raby rebuild on it, but his rebuilds have breached the 10k barrier, so I doubt that will ever happen.

I must say I'm loving the strong colour co-ordination with the car and the bike, and the personal touches and themes that link both.
Great sense of style :)
